Il Racine di Luciano Erba

Per l’edizione integrale del teatro di Racine uscita nel 2009 nei «Meridiani» Mondadori, Erba tradusse due tragedie di natura diversa: la burrascosa Bajazet e la più estatica Esther. Il saggio analizza le scelte metriche e stilistiche di queste due versioni erbiane confrontandole con quelle di altri traduttori ed evidenziando gli specifici problemi di resa posti dall’alexandrin raciniano. Ne emerge una strategia traduttoria – quella erbiana – che privilegia soluzioni razionalizzanti e cadenze prosaiche: che ci offre, cioè, un Racine dalla retorica alleggerita, dalle potenzialità declamatorie affievolite e dalle formulazioni più dirette e quotidiane; con effetti di sottrazione e sprezzatura che paiono solidali con quelli sperimentati da Erba nella propria opera poetica. (English version) "Luciano Erba's Racine" For the unabridged edition of Racine's play that came out in 2009 in the Mondadori «Meridiani», Erba translated two tragedies of a different nature: the stormy Bajazet and the more ecstatic Esther. The essay analyses the stylistic and metrical choices of these two Erbian versions by comparing them with those of other translators and highlighting the specific translation problems posed by the Racinian alexandrin. What emerges is a translation strategy - the Erbian one - that privileges rationalizing solutions and prosaic cadences: that is, it offers us a Racine with lightened rhetoric, weakened declamatory potentialities and more direct and everyday formulations; with effects of subtraction and “sprezzatura” that seem to be sympathetic to those experienced by Erba in his own poetic work.
