In India, communal violence has been considered one of the most insidious challenges to the stability of the democratic state, questioning its pluralistic vocation and, ultimately, its unity. However, because of its origins and the assumptions it entails, the validity of 'communalism' as a descriptive clincher needs to be questioned. This contribution contains an introductory argument to the study of interfaith relations in India. Its aim is to both propose a critique to the employment of the terminology of 'communalism' and take a stand with respect to it. To do so, it focuses on how the concept of nationalism is used in India with respect to that of communalism.

Abstract
In India, communal violence has been considered one of the most insidious challenges to the stability of the democratic state, questioning its pluralistic vocation and, ultimately, its unity. However, because of its origins and the assumptions it entails, the validity of 'communalism' as a descriptive clincher needs to be questioned. This contribution contains an introductory argument to the study of interfaith relations in India. Its aim is to both propose a critique to the employment of the terminology of 'communalism' and take a stand with respect to it. To do so, it focuses on how the concept of nationalism is used in India with respect to that of communalism.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
