LOCAL CULTURAL HERITAGE AND THE TOKYO CHARTER ON EDUCATION

In a very complex historical phase in which capitalist priorities have strongly questioned ethical values and human relations, there is a need to put people and their creativity back at the centre. Within the cultural and educational sector, this has made it possible to elaborate fundamental reflections to give a ‘new centrality’ to the role of culture for the sustainable development of humanity. In fact, without culture it becomes extremely difficult to elaborate future perspectives capable of developing shared and participatory policies that are no longer entrusted to growing individualisation. Analyzing the realities of various countries of the world, from the Far East to the Far West, one feels the need to activate a new ‘humanism’ and, in order to do this, it is necessary to bring culture more fully into the whole conception of the new and of the innovation in which it is important to invest from now on. In fact, the theme of education is at the center of the ‘Reconnecting with your culture’ pedagogical program, the aim of which is to bring younger generations closer to the cultural values of their heritage, thanks to which they can live in the present to build the future. We must, therefore, know how to design educational programs capable of building a better world that favors the enhancement of local culture. This contribution introduces the Tokyo Charter, published in 2021, on the theme of cultural heritage education and its application at the intercontinental level.
