In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the depiction of themes such as the fountain of youth, the garden of delights, court games and pastimes was often accompanied by the presence of musical instruments. The miniatures accompanying the figurative cycles linked to chivalric novels such as the Roman de la Rose or the Roman d’Alexandre, or the elegant woodcuts accompanying the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili or even Titian’s sumptuous canvases depicting Venus with a musician, tell of the importance of musical accompaniment for experiencing a state of full wellbeing. With this contribution I intend to focus on the presence of musical instruments in some figurative themes associated with wellbeing and happiness in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance.
