The question of communication in its various forms is certainly one of the characteristic themes of the eighteenth century and one of the central problems of the Enlightenment. The theme of communication can even serve as a kind of Leitfaden to address Kant’s thought in its various dimensions - and, in an autonomous form compared to Kant, communication plays perhaps an even greater role in Fichte, which has also been largely neglected by Fichte scholarship itself. In this paper, it will be shown how the problem of communication runs through the entire development of Fichte’s thought and always plays a central role in it, by focusing on Fichte’s theory of society as a world of human communication and of the institutions that make it possible.
