Abstract

Bartolomeo Panizza, a pupil of Antonio Scarpa and professor of anatomy at the University of Pavia between 1815 and 1864, was the author of important contributions in the field of neurological studies and a true pioneer in research on the cerebral localization of psychic functions with the discovery of the cortical visual area. A man of science, dedicated to teaching and research in the anatomical and physiological field, he was also animated by a great political passion, a mirror of the ideals of the Italian Risorgimento.
