Abstract

A key feature in the relation between citizens and media is related to the phenomenon of surveillance capitalism and «dataveillance». Digital platforms extract and resell a massive amount of data, often without full awareness by users. Moving from the V-DATA 2022 research project, this paper aims to understand how media portray the relationship between citizens and the major technological platforms. We investigate how television and online newspapers differ from each other, often placing themselves at opposite poles, in topics, styles and narratives dealing with phenomena like privacy, protection of personal data, and the relationship between citizens and platforms.
