Abstract

This essay presents a reflection on the so-called auxiliary sciences, starting from the volume published by the Monumenta Germaniae Historica on the occasion of its foundation 200 years ago. The papers of the volume are integrated into the broader international debate on the prospects of medieval studies, both in relation to the „digital turn“ and to the risk that the Middle Ages will become marginalized in university curricula and „irrelevant“ to contemporary society and politics.
