This chapter provides an overview of the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods for the monitoring and maintenance of railway infrastructure. Topics addressed are the monitoring of track geometry and rail defects, the monitoring of railway bridges, the detection of faults in the overhead equipment and the use of AI for the planning of infrastructure maintenance. Emphasis is placed on the use of AI in the context of new methodologies for track monitoring, particularly from in-service trains, and use of AI in combination with non-conventional sensors.
