Although Gramsci never explicitly mentions Spinoza in his writings, he is certainly familiar with the fundamental lines of thought of the author of the Ethica from his university studies. Furthermore, some fundamental aspects of Gramsci’s «philosophy of praxis» could derive from a direct or indirect reading of Spinoza: immanentism, strict monism, the conception of freedom as consciousness of necessity, and so on. This essay aims to investigate the possible sources of this presentation of Spinoza and its influences on Gramsci’s interpretation of Marx in the Prison Notebooks, in the light of the most recent acquisitions of Gramscian scholars.
