This study aims to scrutinise in deep the relations between syntactic and semantic structures within the noun phrase. It emphasises on rhetoric construction figures dealing with grammar. Starting from the Port-Royal distinction between distinct and confused meaning of the modifier it enlarges to a set of properties deriving from the oblique semantic adaptability of the adjective (Prandi, 1992). A survey of figurative and non figurative occurrences demonstrates the complex modifying process of the adjective in the noun phrase.
