The artistic-musical poikilia is a broad and variegated concept that spans the entire history of ancient melic poetry, conveying very different aesthetic values depending on the era and author. From the second half of the 5th century bc onwards, the term became synonymous with ‘complexity’ in reference to the virtuosic practices of the so-called ‘New Music’. Probably because of the connection of poikilia with the idea of movement, ancient aesthetic evaluations focus mainly on the rhythmic aspects of musical variation, whose great emotional impact is explained precisely by the correlations between musical rhythm, motor reactions, and physiological rhythm.

Abstract
The artistic-musical poikilia is a broad and variegated concept that spans the entire history of ancient melic poetry, conveying very different aesthetic values depending on the era and author. From the second half of the 5th century bc onwards, the term became synonymous with ‘complexity’ in reference to the virtuosic practices of the so-called ‘New Music’. Probably because of the connection of poikilia with the idea of movement, ancient aesthetic evaluations focus mainly on the rhythmic aspects of musical variation, whose great emotional impact is explained precisely by the correlations between musical rhythm, motor reactions, and physiological rhythm.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
