After defining and discussing the notion of university Third mission, the article presents some empirical evidence on the main characteristics of Italian academics’ and universities’ Third mission activities focusing on Academic entrepreneurship, Academic engagement and Public engagement, and their geographical distribution across the country. A possible expla- nation of the regional differences within these activities based on the combination of factors internal and external to a university is also provided. Finally, five main issues are pointed out for further discussion and research.
