This paper analyses the contribution of the University of Pavia and Lombard culture in the study of hydrogeological dynamics in the Po Valley during the Early Modern Period. Specifically, it focuses on the technical questions relating to land reclamation and water distribution, as well as the forms of ownership, access and hydraulic distribution infrastructures. After outlining the specific agro-ecological context of Lombardy, some major studies are presented. These concern the relations between hydraulics and land management in Lombardy, focussing on juridical aspects of the exploitation of this resource, on mathematical and engineering studies relating to the study of questions concerning hydrogeological stability and on the institutionalisation of the teaching of engineering at the University of Pavia.
