On 3 September 2025, at the Auditorium of the Italy Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, within the programme of the Holy See Pavilion, the international symposium “FIDES ET SPES «errando per le strade ondose». Pilgrimages between Japan and Europe” was held. The event aimed to bring the international academic and ecclesial community closer to the themes of cultural encounters between Japan and Europe from the sixteenth century to the present day. In particular, both today and in the past, the work of missionaries and of the “hidden Christians” in Japan continues to be a vital source of life for the Church. Thanks to their faith and their courage to “wander along wavering paths” wherever they were called, they remain an irreplaceable and essential guide for fostering peaceful dialogue. The Symposium received the high patronage of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Japan, the Holy See Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, and the Dicastery for Evangelization – Section for the Fundamental Questions of Evangelization in the World. The central focus of the Symposium was the commemoration of the 440th anniversary of the arrival of the first Japanese embassy at Holy See in March 1585.
