This article investigates the scansion of Italian Ars Nova poetry, focusing on the interaction between linguistic accentuation and musical rhythm. Drawing on examples from Trecento composers, it examines how melodic accent, melismas, and rhythmic patterns shape the metrical profile of verses, and discusses cases where music confirms, modifies, or contrasts with linguistic accent. The study hi- ghlights the methodological implications for analysing layered accentual systems and the interplay between text and music.

Abstract

This article investigates the scansion of Italian Ars Nova poetry, focusing on the interaction between linguistic accentuation and musical rhythm. Drawing on examples from Trecento composers, it examines how melodic accent, melismas, and rhythmic patterns shape the metrical profile of verses, and discusses cases where music confirms, modifies, or contrasts with linguistic accent. The study hi- ghlights the methodological implications for analysing layered accentual systems and the interplay between text and music.
