This short essay, inspired by the reading of two volumes dedicated to the History of Roman Apulia from 27 BC to Late Antiquity, focuses primarily on the vexata quaestio of Italic identity during the reign of Augustus. The division of Italia into eleven regiones – by the use of ethnic names with the exception of Aemilia (VIII) and Transpadana (XI) – also aims to emphasise its irreducible alterity with respect to the provinciae.

Abstract

This short essay, inspired by the reading of two volumes dedicated to the History of Roman Apulia from 27 BC to Late Antiquity, focuses primarily on the vexata quaestio of Italic identity during the reign of Augustus. The division of Italia into eleven regiones – by the use of ethnic names with the exception of Aemilia (VIII) and Transpadana (XI) – also aims to emphasise its irreducible alterity with respect to the provinciae.
