The years of the First World War, and 1917 in particular (marked by the defeat at Caporetto and the outbreak of the Russian Revolution), exerted a decisive influence on Italian philosophy. From the perspective of the ‘external’ history of philosophy, this essay specifically examines, on one hand, the evolution of the relationship between Benedetto Croce and Giovanni Gentile, beginning with their debate over Italy’s intervention in the conflict ; on the other, it explores the discussion among Italian Marxists – namely Amadeo Bordiga, Antonio Gramsci, and Rodolfo Mondolfo – concerning the Marxist character, or lack thereof, of the Bolshevik Revolution.
