The theme of Aeschylus’ Homeric inclination has ancient origins and dates back to the poet himself. An examination of Aeschylus’ quotes in the scholia vetera to the Iliad and the Odyssey reveals a bipartition on this point. On the one hand, the tragedian’s relationship with Homer is viewed positively, while, on the other hand, their differences are highlighted. The second perspective prevails in Aristarchus’ exegesis, which was inspired by a diorthotic aim more than reasons of literary criticism or history. The osmosis of some of these Aristarchean remarks into the class of the scholia exegetica is accompanied by a process of critical resemantisation: while Aristarchus believed that comparisons with the Neoteroi and Aeschylus were misleading for the diorthosis of Homer’s poems, other exegetes found it effective to reuse his comparisons to highlight developments in the poetic tradition.
