This paper examines the function of the libretto in Verdi's operas and its relations with the musical text. After a general introduction of the relationship between literary and musical form in opera, the evolution of this relationship is illustrated considering four operas from different periods, on libretto by different poets: "Luisa Miller" (1849), "La traviata" (1853), "Aida" (1871), "Falstaff" (1893). Each libretto is examined from four perspectives: genesis, dramatic structure, metric structures, literary style.
