Abstract

Acoustic emissions of animals serve communicative purposes and most often contain species-specific and individual information exploitable to listeners, rendering bioacoustics predestined for biodiversity monitoring in visually inaccessible habitats. Recording bioacoustic signals allows reproducible identification and documentation of species’ occurrences, but it requires technical prerequisites and behavioural precautions that are summarized. The storing, visualizing and analysing of sound recordings is illustrated and major software tools are shortly outlined. Finally, different approaches to bioacoustic monitoring are described, tips for setting up an acoustic inventory are compiled and a key for procedural advancement and a checklist to successful recording are given.

The Biology category includes resources that individually cover a broad range of topics in the biological sciences. Resources covering specific areas in biology, such as general microbiology, protozoology, parasitology, biometrics, biological education, heredity, and evolutionary biology are also placed in this category.

Abc Taxa - The Journal Dedicated to Capacity Building in Taxonomy and Collection Management http://www.abctaxa.be/ ISSN 1784-1283 (hard copy) ISSN 1784-1291 (on-line pdf) D/2010/0339/3 Abc Taxa is a series of peer-reviewed manuals dedicated to capacity building in zoological and botanical taxonomy, in collection management and in good practices in taxonomic and curatorial research. It facilitates the liberation of taxonomic and curatorial skills, competences and know-how needed to carry out basic to advanced taxonomic research on a particular living taxon. Abc Taxa is the product of the Belgian National Focal Point to the Global Taxonomy Initiative, but the series is the joint effort of the three main Belgian natural history institutions, being the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (Brussels), the Royal Museum for Central Africa (Tervuren) and the National Botanic Garden of Belgium (Meise).
