The scrutiny of a significant sample of the explanatory marginalia preserved in the ‘Antinoe Theocritus’ (P.Ant. s.n.; MP3 1487; Vth/VIth c.) highlights quite elementary exegetical features proper to a school copy in the hands of one or more students interested in reading Hellenistic poetry and plausibly aiming at social prestige in a provincial chief town of bilingual and bicultural late antique Upper Egypt. As a consequence, these marginalia do not provide important evidence for the beginnings of early Byzantine scholiography.
