The article discusses the pivotal geopolitical and strategic role played by Spanish Lombardy within the European and Mediterranean framework between 1550 and 1600, by also using some concepts drawn from modern strategic science, such as Grand Strategy and Soft and Hard Power. The approach of the article intertwines diferrent issues and aspects - political, social, economic, geopolitical, institutional etc. - in order to reconstruct the nature and mechanisms of the the so-called Spanish Empire, as well as the peculiar geopolitics of early modern Italy.
