A remarkable increase of knowledge on fungal biodiversity in Italy was registered in the last five years. The authors report the up-to-date number of fungi per regions together with distributive and ecological data on hypogeous fungi. Specific case studied such as alpine fungi, orchid mycorrhizas symbionts, invasive species and the use as food of macrofungi by red squirrels are analysed. In situ conservation strategies carried out on target species and/or taxonomic groups are also pointed out.
