The role of autonomic nervous system in the genesis of reperfusion arrhythmias is still controversial. Two confounding factors in the evaluation of the specific role of parasympathetic tone are: the concomitant sympathetic activation occurring rvhen the vago-sympathetic trunk is stimulated in the dog and the reduction in heart rate with the attendant amelioration in the degree of ischemia induced by vagal stimulation. We evaluated the effect of vagotomy and of vagal stimulation on the incidence of reperfusion arrhythmias using an animal species, the feline, in which a pure vagal stimulation can be performed. To avoid any effect on the degree of ischemic damage, vagal stimulation was started only few seconds before reperfusion. Heart rate was either allowed to decrease or kept constant by ventricular pacing.

Abstract

Cardiovascular & Hematology Research covers all levels of investigation into the normal and pathogenic functions of the heart, vasculature, and soluble blood components. Cell biology of vascular tissue and formed elements of blood, biochemical regulation of thrombosis, therapeutic strategies for treatment of cardiac and vascular diseases are also considered. Resources on hematologic oncology are excluded and are placed in the Oncogenesis & Cancer Research category.
