The low temp. γ irradn. of Ni(II) complexes with N-cetyltetraazamacrocyclic ligands in CH2Cl2 and tetrahydrofurane matrixes lead to the selective prodn. of electron loss and electron capture centers which were identified by ESR as Ni(III) and Ni(I). The anal. of the g tensors is consistent with tetragonally distorted D4hd7 and d9 configurations with the unpaired electron in dz2 and dx2-y2 orbitals resp. The irradn. of the neat compds. selectively yields alkyl type radicals from the cetyl chains; a mechanism based on the migration of the Ni(III) and Ni(I) states in the cryst. matrix and the redn. of Ni(III) centers by C centered radicals is invoked to explain these results.
