The paramagnetic products of the solid state radiolysis of polyorganophosphazenes of general formula [NP(OPhR)2]n, where R denotes H, methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, t-butyl, cumyl, were investigated by ESR spectroscopy. The results suggest that most of the radiation damage is localized on the aromatic moieties leading to the formation of alkyl, cyclohexadienyl and benzyl type radicals. The presence of strong singlets in the centre of the spectra is associated to species, having h.f. splittings smaller than the experimental line width, for which reasonable candidates are aromatic radical cations and anions, phenoxyl and phenyl type radicals. When non-aromatic substitutents at the phosphorous centre are present as in [NPN(Et)2Cl2]n, evidence of direct involvement of the phosphazene backbone was obtained.
