A random copolymer of vinylidene fluoride with hexafluoropropene was gamma irradiated at room temperature both under vacuum and in air and gel fraction was measured as a function of dose. Main chain scission and crosslinking concurrently took place and the relative yields of the two reactions were derived. By ESR analysis, the role played by radiolysis radicals was studied. Moreover, as far as irradiation in air was concerned, the effect both of dose rate and sample's shape was investigated.

Abstract

A random copolymer of vinylidene fluoride with hexafluoropropene was gamma irradiated at room temperature both under vacuum and in air and gel fraction was measured as a function of dose. Main chain scission and crosslinking concurrently took place and the relative yields of the two reactions were derived. By ESR analysis, the role played by radiolysis radicals was studied. Moreover, as far as irradiation in air was concerned, the effect both of dose rate and sample's shape was investigated.
