The petrographic description and the chemical composition of andesitic pebbles from the miocene conglomeratic sequences outcropping in the Aveto Valley (Northern Apennines) are given. The major (Si, Al, Fe, Mg, Ca, Na, K) and trace (Rb, Ba, Th, U, REE) element data show: —the geochemical characteristics are indicative of continental margins associations; —the role of crustal material is significant for the « andesitic » magmas genesis; contamination models could explain irregular distribution of the elements;—the REE patterns are consistent with melting of garnet rocks. The presented data suggest that volcanic clasts derived from a calc-alkaline andesitic suite. It is postulated that these magmas result from melting of garnet rocks and contamination of crustal material.
