Nonlinear optics will have a double role in next-generation optical communications. On the one hand, nonlinear effects arising in the propagation of very short pulses inside optical fibers will give an important contribution to signal degradation, on the other hand, signal management and corrections of signal distortions will be likely based on the availability of integrated nonlinear optical devices.
