This essay studies from a bibliographical and literary point of view the Rime in Italian of Cosme de Aldana, poems in which the Spanish poet mourns the death of his brother Francisco (Milan, Giacomo Picaglia, 1587). A material inspection makes it clear that the only copy known until recently (that of the Biblioteca Nacional de España of Madrid) presents an alteration of the order of the last fascicule folios and that a correct description of this edition should be based on the copy owned by the Biblioteca Ambrosiana of Milan. The structure of the volume is bipartite, opening with an individual collection which is followed by a section of sonnets of proposal and response, or simply of proposal. An analysis of the internal organization of these texts shows that the poet organized the first part of the book as a canzoniere (although it is not exactly Petrarchian). In his own books of castilian poems – also dedicated to the planctus for his brother’s death – Aldana does not exercise the same care in ordering his material. It is revealing that a Spanish man of letters living in Italy (as he did) paid this kind of attention to his Italian rather than to his Spanish poems.
