In Italy, the professional geographer is not highly regarded, this article offers some reflections about its usefulness and use of its competences. The insufficient knowledge of nature, territories and every hypothetical cause provoking geological instability means that the reclamation action plans are not often appropriate to the needs and, therefore, cannot yield the expected benefits. In this respect, scholars maintain that these professions are generally not included in the staff members dealing with these natural phenomena, and it is also important to consider the fact that skilled experts in this field of research are called every time they are needed. However, the wrong attitude just lies in this last idea that has caused the contemporary situation of total incoherence of the mountain areas and of danger of lowland areas. In fact, although the expert occasionally called for special cases, by those who have no environmental or landscape experience, could help to solve the specific problem, it is necessary a constant and daily care of the problematic area.
