The article tries to point out the interpretative function of esthetism by comparing Thomas Mann's tale Der Tod in Venedig with Luchino Visconti's famous film adaptation. The author investigates the modalities of the adaptation and comes to the conclusion that Visconti tried to portrate esthetism and go beyond it.
