Abstract

The article shows how a private institution took care of children, how the children were accepted and which activities they were performing during their stay in the nursery school. The first nursery school in Pavia opened on April 1838, in the San Bartolomeo district. This institution took care of children in distress and responded to the difficulties mothers might encounter in caring for their children during the work day, which involved manufacturing and industrial activity as well as working at home, and it also sought to deal with the growing number of abandoned children, which contributed to the increase in infant mortality.
