Several studies described a positive association between body mass index increase and birth defects risk. Data on plasma concentration of folate in pregnant women with obesity have shown values far from those recommended, regardless of diet, while folate levels have to be higher before pregnancy to reduce birth defects risk such as neural tube defects. We report a descriptive review of the most recent studies (from 2005 till 2015) to evaluate folic acid status through a population of women of childbearing-age affected by obesity.

Abstract
Several studies described a positive association between body mass index increase and birth defects risk. Data on plasma concentration of folate in pregnant women with obesity have shown values far from those recommended, regardless of diet, while folate levels have to be higher before pregnancy to reduce birth defects risk such as neural tube defects. We report a descriptive review of the most recent studies (from 2005 till 2015) to evaluate folic acid status through a population of women of childbearing-age affected by obesity.File in questo prodotto:
