The standard beamforming algorithm implemented by ultrasound imaging systems currently on the market is Delay and Sum. With this method however, B-mode image quality in terms of resolution and contrast is limited. For this reason, several alternative beamformers have been proposed in the literature, which mainly employ adaptive beamforming techniques to operate image formation. In this paper we modify and improve an existing data-independent beamforming algorithm called Delay Multiply and Sum (DMAS), originally conceived for RADAR imaging of breast cancer, and propose its use in medical ultrasound imaging applications. This work shows the first results obtained by applying the improved version of DMAS for the formation of simulated ultrasound images and demonstrates that significantly higher performance can be achieved compared to traditional DAS.
