The present paper is a summary of some studies that have dealt with a systematic documentation program aimed to structure actions for the protection and enhancement of the village of Portobello in Panama. The fortune of the place, declared a UNESCO site in 1980, is due to the strategic importance in the Seventeenth Century by its defensive system, when by the will of King of Spain, Filippo II, the Portobello Bay became one of the main storage centers of treasures conquered by the Spanish crown in central Amer-ica. The fortifications, designed by the Italian engineer Battista Antonelli at the end of 1500, were able to be organi-cally included in what is today the highly identity informal city of the bay. The interest for the village, abandoned after the pirates plunder and witnessed of the devastating weather events that have destroyed much of the original image, has been required at the end of the Twentieth Century, thanks to the joint action of University of Pavia and the Patronage of Portobello and San Lorenzo del Cha-gres. Since 2010 have been promoted programs for knowledge, documentation and enhancement of this im-portant Caribbean landscape of Panama that led to some of the results exposed in this paper. The experiences show an applied research aimed to create a digital database, an ar-chive of point clouds and photographic images capable of structuring a set of three-dimensional models of the heritage. The 3D reality based models, developed through accurate photographic processing procedures and verified on the corresponding point clouds obtained by laser scanner, lead to reach important results in the topic of landscape knowledge and management. The paper reports the experi-ences of analysis performed on the field, the processing data operations and digital archive management, useful for the preparation of the valorization project for the Pueblo of Portobello.
