This paper aims to illustrate an on-going research on the theme of the reuse and valorization of Cultural Heritage, active since 2008. This contribution focused on the reuse of ecclesiastical complexes, partially abandoned or deconsecrated. The principle issue is to discuss different possible strategies design solution in order to achieve both the conservation and the restoration of the architectonical value of these complexes and to propose new use, new story for them in a more general approach of urban regeneration of our cities. The study analyses principally the compatibility, at all scales, between the Cultural Heritage and the project design hypothesis proposed and also the technical, architectural and social feasibility, joined to the regulatory compliance of the project in the belief of the historical and architectural value to reuse. The case study is the church of Santa Maria alle Cacce in Pavia. Starting from a deep knowledge of its historical evolution and a critical investigation, it has been possible to read the state of decay of the complex and to propose some different reuse design solutions to respond to a new change user’s need. The solution hypotheses derive from an experience at the University of Pavia.
