An approach aimed at helping future physics teachers to reconsider their subject knowledge and make it suitable for teaching is described. The approach was tested with student teachers, attending the Post-graduate School of the University of Pavia that prepares to teach Mathematics and Physics in high school. The method and tools designed to deepen the conceptual understanding of friction phenomena are reported.
