Abstract

Despite the progressive secularization of society, continue to appear unforeseen currents of spirituality, witnessed by the various forms of pilgrimage that attract not only faithful people, but also citizens seeking new religiosity or lovers of nature and knowledge of places through new forms of tourism. Pilgrimage is a particular type of journey, an itinerary, a longstanding path and an experience of cultural and social knowledge where religion or spirituality is looking for new places, new spaces and new tales for profess faith. The pilgrim tourist is therefore in search of a life experience to know places, to discover its environmental, socio-cultural, historical characteristics and to get in direct relationship with the territory in a sustainable perspective, as defined within the 10YFP Sustainable Tourism Program (UNWTO). Through sustainable tourism is therefore possible to contribute not only to the achievement of socio-economic and cultural objectives (Sustainable Tourism Charter, Lanzarote, 1995), but also to the recovery of degraded areas and to the enhancement of natural resources and of local identities. This deep link between the tourist-pilgrim and the crossed landscape becomes an important theme of architecture. From these premises, the design project solutions of accommodation facilities and service for one of the most important religious and tourist pilgrimage routes, such as the Via Francigena, are presented. It’s a millenary road system that has been travelled in the centuries by merchants, sovereigns and religious. The archbishop of Canterbury, Sigerico, made the precise reconstruction of the 79 stages of his 1,800 km route from Rome to Canterbury (990). In 2004 it was proclaimed by the Council of Europe "Great European Cultural Route" and in 2007 "Reseau porteur". Today, the number of walkers, pilgrims, hikers is increasing and it reveals the growing involvement of institutions and associations jointly committed to making the Via feasible, promoting it at all levels.
