The article analyses the theory of capillarity worked out by Pierre Simon Laplace (1749-1827) in his Mécanique Céleste and in two supplements published in 1806 and 1807. Laplace's molecular conceptions of matter are compared with his actual handling of capillarity using a continuous model of fluids. Some views are expressed on the important studies of Robert Fox and Jean Dhombres on Laplace's molecular physics.

Abstract
The article analyses the theory of capillarity worked out by Pierre Simon Laplace (1749-1827) in his Mécanique Céleste and in two supplements published in 1806 and 1807. Laplace's molecular conceptions of matter are compared with his actual handling of capillarity using a continuous model of fluids. Some views are expressed on the important studies of Robert Fox and Jean Dhombres on Laplace's molecular physics.File in questo prodotto:
