Inner state talk provides a real-life index of children’s sociocognitive competencies. In this study, preschoolers’ cognitive state talk (CST) with siblings and best friends were transcribed and analysed to investigate their cognitive (language and ToM) and behavioral (prosocial behaviour) correlates. 44 children (mean age = 4 years 3 months) were given tests of theory of mind and verbal ability and filmed playing with a sib (at home) and with a friend (at school); teachers rated children’s prosocial behaviour. Individual differences in CST to friend (but not to sibling) were associated with theory-of-mind performance and prosocial behaviour. In addiction CST (both with sibling and friend) were unrelated to language. Conversations between friends emerged as a particularly useful context for investigating individual differences in children’s talk about the mind.
