Using spatial analysis tools to foster energy transition: real study cases applied to energy distribution networks

In today's energy scenario, the decarbonization objectives and the consequent electrification of end uses are forcing distribution system operators to manage new complicated challenges. To effectively address those issues, it is increasingly important to rely on automatic tools to foster the so-called energy transition. In support of the planning activity that the distribution system operator must carry out, GIS-based tools allow to analyze, study and represent the energy grids not just from a schematic point of view as was in the past but including location and georeferenced information of the assets. Thanks to these tools, distribution system operators can perform data analysis, including spatial, to improve the quality of the planning process. The paper presents two tools deployed by Unareti, one of the leading Italian distribution system operators, intended to support the operations and choices of public bodies and stakeholders involved in the energy transition. In particular, for the electricity grid, the tool can guide the charging point operators in better managing the charging station's infrastructure development, while for the gas network, it can help improve the planning of new biomethane production plants connected to the gas network.
