In this work we extended the capabilities of this solution by doubling the available pump power through polarization combining of two tapered diodes. In order to optimize the pump absorption in birefringent Yb:KYW, we opted for a crossed-crystal design in which two identical 3-mm-long, 10%-doped Ng-cut Yb:KYW samples were housed in a water-cooled holder with mutually orthogonal Nm-axis orientation. A remarkable four-passes small signal gain G0>120 was obtained with excellent preservation of the spatial beam quality (M2<1.1) and temporal/spectral characteristics of the ~300-fs seeder pulses after amplification
