This paper addresses sustainable reuse of urban squares, which have shifted from historically significant social catalysts to marginal areas used as parking. Abstract

This paper addresses sustainable reuse of urban squares, which have shifted from historically significant social catalysts to marginal areas used as parking. The adoption of NBS (Nature-Based Solutions) infrastructures and tools for participatory design in support of urban resilience requires solid documentation frameworks and new predictive functional models to develop coherent proposals. In this context, the use of advanced digital technologies and dynamic information systems supports accurate documentation and analysis of urban heritage, aving the way for the production of smart digital twins. These tools enable a sustainable and participatory anagement of public spaces, particularly squares, which can once again become identity-rich and inclusive places, oving beyond the logic of vehicular mobility and enhancing urban quality. The paper presents some results from he scan-to-model digitization of selected squares in the historic center of Pavia, developed within the DORIAN roject ‒ Digital modeling in suppOrt of the desigN of safe, sustaInable and resilieNt environments ‒ promoted and coordinated by the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture at the University of Pavia. It is expected that the reality-based three-dimensional models thus produced will become useful tools to be shared with other research groups and experts from several scientific fields, supporting conscious design activities and the planning of restoration interventions.
