The seismic protection of industrial facilities is of paramount importance; potential consequences of accidents, besides economic losses, can be catastrophic for the environment and people’s safety. Several post-earthquake field observations pointed out the vulnerability of industrial plants and the need for seismic mitigation detailing aiming not only at collapse prevention but also at maintaining plant operability. Different sources of vulnerability can be identified by analysing the damages observed to piping layouts, tanks, and mechanical equipment installed in industrial facilities. This paper provides a comprehensive review of earthquake-induced damage observed in industrial facilities following recent earthquakes that occurred around the world. The causes of observed damage were analysed to provide useful indications in terms of defining specific performance criteria to be used in a performance-based design framework and for evaluating possible mitigation detailing. A classification of the damage is proposed in terms of involved components and observed failure modes.

Abstract
A classification of the damage is proposed in terms of involved components and observed failure modes.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
