Autoimmune diseases are complex pathologies characterized by a dysfunction of the immune system, which mistakenly attacks “self” antigens, resulting in cellular and tissue damage. Although these conditions are mainly caused by a genetic predisposition, other factors, such as the environment, hormones, and infections, are also believed to be decisive. Epigenetics is the study of the molecular modifications dictated by these latter factors, which regulate gene expression without altering the DNA sequence [1].

Abstract

Autoimmune diseases are complex pathologies characterized by a dysfunction of the immune system, which mistakenly attacks “self” antigens, resulting in cellular and tissue damage. Although these conditions are mainly caused by a genetic predisposition, other factors, such as the environment, hormones, and infections, are also believed to be decisive. Epigenetics is the study of the molecular modifications dictated by these latter factors, which regulate gene expression without altering the DNA sequence [1].
