Abstract

We study the electron transmission probability in semiconductor superlattices where the height of the barriers is modulated by a Gaussian profile. Such structures act as efficient energy band-pass filters and, contrary to previous designs, it is expected to present a lower number of unintentional defects and, consequently, better performance. The j–Vcharacteristic presents negative differential resistance with peak-to-valley ratios much greater than in conventional semiconductor superlattices

Materials Science and Engineering is concerned with admixtures of matter or the basic matter from which products are made. The category covers ceramics, paper and wood products, polymers, textiles, composites, coatings & films, and biomaterials. Other areas covered in this category include Materials Chemistry, the application of chemistry to materials design and testing; Condensed Matter/Solid State Physics, the branch of physics concerned with the structure and properties of condensed matter (superconductors, semiconductors, ferroelectrics, and dielectrics); and Physical Chemistry/Chemical Physics, the application of the concepts and laws of physics to chemical phenomena.

Journal of Applied Physics is the American Institute of Physics' (AIP) archival journal for significant new results in applied physics; content is published online daily, collected into two online and printed issues per month (24 issues per year). The journal publishes articles that emphasize understanding of the physics underlying modern technology, but distinguished from technology on the one side and pure physics on the other. Applied Physics Reviews is a series of occasional review articles on topics within this scope. The Proceedings of the Conference on Magnetism and Magnetic Materials is an annual feature.
