Addition of 2,4-D restores cell division in sycamore cell suspension cultures made resting by transferring them into medium without auxin. Addition of fusicoccin at concentrations between 10-8 and 10- 5 M cannot substitute for the effect of auxin. However fusicoccin clearly influences cell membrane activity in this material, as shown by the increase of K+ uptake and proton secretion. On the other hand no significant effect of 2,4-D on ion transport in sycamore cell suspension cultures was detected. These results suggest that the characteristic effect of auxin on cell multiplication is not linked to the activation of a K+ /H+ exchange mechanism at cell membrane level.
