Abstract

Our experimental results have shown that association of high molecular weight DNA with positevly charged liposomes, both unilamellar and multilamellar, will result in protection from DNase action and in enhancement of DNA association with plant protoplasts. At the moment our results do not permit to estblish conclusively whether DNA molecules have been transferred indide the protoplats. Furthemore, if uptake actually occurred, it renains to be shown whther DNA can escape the action of cytoplasmic nucleases. B. subtilis DNA has been utilized throughout this work. It is conceivable that DNA fragments prepared from other prokaryotic or eukaryotic organisms will yield simila results. The use opf well characterized genetic markers, together with the appropriate selective systems will tell us if DNA is also replicated and expressed giving rise to heritable modifications of the recipient line.
